Mr Talvinder Singh (Vin)
Consultant Hand, Wrist, Elbow & Shoulder Surgeon
Upper Limb Microvascular Surgery
Mr Talvinder Singh, known as Vin, is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. He specialises in upper-limb surgery, with particular expertise in conditions affecting the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder, alongside complex trauma and microvascular surgery.
Vin’s private practice is based across the West Midlands. He consults and operates at The Priory Hospital in Birmingham, The Meriden Hospital in Coventry, Spire Parkway Hospital in Solihull and Droitwich Spa Hospital, part of Circle Health Group.
After graduating from the University of the West Indies, Vin completed his Basic Surgical Training at the Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust. His interest in upper-limb surgery developed during his appointment as a Hand Research Registrar at University Hospitals Birmingham. During this period, he contributed to several recognised research publications and established a strong academic foundation in trauma and orthopaedic surgery.
A National Training Number in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery took him to the South West London training region for his specialist training. He was later awarded the prestigious Medartis Hand Travelling Fellowship to Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore, India. As part of the fellowship, Vin completed an advanced microsurgical skills course under the guidance of the internationally renowned microsurgeon Dr S. Raja Sabapathy.
On completing his specialist training, Vin undertook a four-month General Trauma Fellowship at Brighton Major Trauma Centre. Two prestigious Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) Upper Limb and Microvascular Surgery Fellowships followed at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in Brisbane, Australia. Over the course of these two years, he gained advanced experience under internationally respected upper-limb surgeons, including Professor Mark Ross and Dr Chris Blenkin.
His commitment to continued professional development led him to obtain the European Diploma in Hand Surgery in 2017. Vin maintains an extensive surgical logbook containing more than 8,000 operative cases and has performed over 40 finger replantation and revascularisation procedures.
Alongside his clinical work, Vin has held senior leadership responsibilities within his NHS Trust, including roles relating to trauma and fragility-fracture care. Close collaboration with plastic and reconstructive surgeons also forms an important part of his management of complex upper-limb trauma. He remains committed to developing collaborative hand trauma services across the Black Country, with the aim of improving access to coordinated, multidisciplinary specialist care.
Education and surgical training are central to Vin’s professional practice. As a recognised trainer for the National Trauma and Orthopaedic Specialty Training Programme on the West Midlands rotation, he supervises specialist orthopaedic trainees in clinical practice, surgical decision-making and operative techniques. He is also a Clinical and Educational Supervisor for Foundation Year doctors. His wider educational commitments include contributing to regional specialist training and teaching medical students from Aston Medical School and the University of Birmingham.
Vin is equally passionate about charitable and humanitarian work. Through the British Society for Surgery of the Hand’s (BSSH) charitable programme in Malawi, he worked alongside local healthcare professionals to provide specialist hand and upper-limb care. His responsibilities included running outpatient clinics, assessing and operating on patients, and supervising local orthopaedic surgeons and trainees. A central focus of this work was developing sustainable local expertise through practical surgical training, teaching, mentorship and shared clinical decision-making.
His other humanitarian work includes serving as a medical consultant for United Sikhs and providing medical support during reconnaissance and aid missions in Malaysia and Indonesia.
Throughout his career, Vin has remained dedicated to delivering compassionate, individualised and high-quality care. He speaks English, Malay, Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu and Bahasa Indonesia, enabling him to communicate effectively with patients from a wide range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Patients particularly value his approachable manner and his ability to explain diagnoses and treatment options clearly, empowering them to make well-informed decisions about their care.
Outside medicine, Vin is married and a devoted father of two. His family provides an important source of support and balance alongside his clinical, educational and humanitarian commitments. He values the time spent with them and the perspective that family life brings to his work as a surgeon, trainer and mentor.

Managerial / Administrative Experience
-
I am currently the Trauma and Fragility Fracture Lead in my department. Over the last year I have been involved in the upgrade of Trauma implants in my trust through the BCA alliance. I also created and streamlined pathways to improve The BPT tariff for fragility As a Senior Fellow at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, I managed the Fellow’s on-call Roster, elective and emergency clinic and theatre bookings. I took up the duty to manage the Registrars timetable and on-call rota during my Year 4,7 and 8 Orthopaedic Specialist Training. I received good feedback from my fellow colleagues and the Clinical Director as I divided the on-calls fairly and equally. I also distributed equal numbers of theatre sessions, clinics and research time according to the JCST guidelines. I was the admin Registrar as a Year 7 trainee. I manage to rectify discrepancies in the registrar timetable and also deal with several registrars in “difficulty” with the aid of the Clinical Director.
Teaching Experience
-
I currently supervise a Foundation Year 1 trainee. I used to lecture 4th year medical student from the University of Queensland every Wednesday on common upper limb conditions and was offered an academic tittle by the University of Queensland as an Associate Lecturer. I was appointed as an Honorary Clinical Lecturer for the University of Birmingham in the past. I gave formal lectures on a weekly basis on common Orthopaedic conditions to Medical Students. I have been invited to be part of the faculty for distal radius workshops organised by Medartis and Trimed at multiple sites in UK and Australia. I have also been part of the faculty for the Basic Surgical Skills course and Basic Plastering course. I continue to take junior trainees through operative procedures and have received fantastic feedback, which is apparent on my portfolio. In my current job, I conduct a teaching ward round of patients on a daily basis, covering basic orthopaedic management and managing critically ill patients. I organise journal clubs and delegate registrars to present interesting and land mark papers that are pertinent to the fellowship exam and upper limb surgery. I conduct viva practice for the FRCS and FRACS exams. I have been invited twice to become an examiner for the FRACS National Mock Exams in Brisbane.
Reviewer
-
After performing well in the European Hand Surgery Diploma, I was invited to become a reviewer of Journal of Hand Surgery – European Volume. In the past, I have been a reviewer of the Bone & joint Journal, Injury and Journal of Hand and Microsurgery.
Career Aspirations
-
I have gained fantastic experience and skills throughout my training, fellowships and consultancy. I am passionate about my sub-speciality and will continue to strive in research and the development of this field.
